Now , MS Dhoni has stepped down as captain in limited over International cricket. He would not walk for the toss in the Indian jersey again. The feeling will take time to sink in for the Indian cricket fans.
First Moment :
Still remember a young MS Dhoni with those long hair and a dynamic batsman in his earlier days. Being the captain of the side without much experience on his side of the WT20 in 2007. Trusted a rookie like Joginder Sharma in the last over of the finals in a big game. That was the moment we knew we have found a captain who is ready to take risks. From then MS Dhoni went on to win everything a captain would want in cricket.
Second Moment :
Another major leap for Indian Cricket came when India went on to become the No.1 test side. This was a tough period for India. Remember a few senior cricketers retiring from the game, a lot of youngsters coming in. MS Dhoni had to make everyone comfortable in there. Right from respecting the senior players to giving the encouragement and confidence to the newcomers. He did handle it pretty well. Taking over the test captaincy from Kumble and to giving Ganguly to captain the side in the final moments of his last test match. These memories will always be special to us.
Third Moment :
Another famous incident we all witnessed was in the 2011 icc Cricket World Cup. No team had won a world cup at home and it had been 28 long years since India had last won a ICC World Cup. In the final, inspite Yuvrai Singh being too good in the tournament, MS Dhoni himself stood up for the big occasion on that night. Promoting himself up the order and playing of the finest knocks under pressure. And winning it for India in his trademark helicopter style by hitting a six. The dream of the Indian Team and entire nation had come true.
The champions trophy was the only ICC tournament MS Dhoni hadn’t won till 2013. MS Dhoni pulled of a special move by opting Ishant Sharma to bowl the 18th over and let the spinners bowl at the death. Yet again his moves worked and India successfully defended a modest 130 in 20 ovrs.
Another moment we would hardly forget was the one in recently held T20WC against Bangladesh where MS Dhoni sprinted about 20 yards to get that runout of the final ball. These are just the highlights of the captaincy career that any player would ever dream of.
MS Dhoni – Captain Cool
The best quality MS Dhoni had that every leader should possess is to trust his players and to get the best out of him. He knew and did it way better than anyone else. Let it be backing Raveindra Jadeja or Rohit Sharma through a lean patch to backing R Ashwin and Shikhar Dhawan. Finally they all have paid back and become the mainstays in our lineup.
Every sportsmen go through ups and downs in his career at some stage. The recent years have not been so far good for him honestly. This is the correct time for him to give up his captaincy with a young squad building around him.
Don’t think there will ever be a captain who will have a legacy like MS Dhoni did. MS Dhoni always brought a sense of calmness and he had one of the best cricketing brains ever and the one who always thought of the future and thus selflessly stepped down as the captain for the betterment of the team.
Remember MS Dhoni once said that his favorite song is ‘Mai pal do pal ka shayar hoon’ just like the song goes
- Main pal do pal ka shayar hoon
- pal do pal meri kahaani hai
It completely depicts his personality in the best way possible. He knew his time had come, the way Virat has played in the past making 2016 all his own and our test side regaining the no. 1 test spot again under him. There would have been no one better than him to understand this and hence the retirement decision came in.
Like Virat Kohli said “You will always be my captain Mahi bhai” similarly, whenever there is a team including you in it, you will always be our CAPTAIN!
